Summary

The production mode of mobile phone manufacturers has four levels. For the first level, the production means sticking the labels of their own brands or just assembling the components from OEMs (SKD or CKD); for the second level, the production involving designs; and for the third level, the production includes the fabrication of module and hardware platform; and the last one is the level of chip production. There are only about ten mobile phone manufacturers in the globe that have the ability of last level. Most domestic brand manufacturers are only at the first or second level.

There are 186 million mobile phones produced in mainland of china in 2003, the global Market share reaches 36%. All these make mainland of china become the territory with highest output of mobile phone in the world. In 2003, the export quantum of china mobile phone is 95.23 million, which accounts for 51% of total output. According to the forecast of China Ministry of Information Industry, the output of china mobile phones will be 170 million in 2004, less than that of last year by 16 million. However, the export quantum of 2004 will rise to 105 million, increasing 10 million compared to that of last year. In order to assure the healthy development of mobile phone industry this year, the core of macroscopic control of Ministry of Information Industry is to encourage mobile phone industry to have breakthrough in three aspects, that are export, research and develop, and the construct ion of related facilities.

items compared 2002 year 2003 year rate of increase
export quantum of mobile phone (million) 63.15 95.23 50.8%
value of exports of mobile phone (million U.S dollar) 5280 7370 39.5%
average price of export (U.S dollar) 83.61 77.39 -8%
import quantum of mobile phone (million) 17.15 22.07 28.7%
value of imports of mobile phone (million U.S dollar) 2375 2810 18.3%
average price of import (U.S dollar) 138.5 127.3 -9%

In 2003, the average price of mobile phones imported is higher than mobile phones exported by about $50 . It is obvious that mobile phones imported are more advanced, while those exported are low-grade mobile phones.

The market of U.S.A and Germany are still the main export area of china mobile phones. They account for 33% and 14% of total export market respectively. At the same time, there are 17 million mobile phones exported via Hongkong port.

Korea is the main country from where china import mobile phones. Mobile phones imported from Korea are worth about $2.03 billion dollar in 2003, the import quantum is about 14 million. The value of imports from Taiwan is about $490 million dollar, the import quantum is about 4 million. The value of imports from Japan is about $200 million dollar, import quantum is about 3.5 million, in which PHS (Personal Handyphone System) account for about 3 million .

For the large consumer market of mobile phone and the large production ability in China, there are thousands of enterprises related to mobile phone, which form a huge industry group. In order to know Chinese mobile phone Industrial Chain deeply, provide convenience for related enterprises to choose cooperative partner; let domestic enterprises know industry competitive environment better, and find the point of breakthrough in exportation, research, development, and the construct ion of related facilities, seven researchers, who come from Research Center of Waterwood and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, spent three months in collecting data and information of several hundred of enterprises related to Chinese mobile phone Industrial Chain thoroughly, translating and sorting correlative foreign reports and articles. After meeting together analyzing, researching, and communicating with exports in this field, they finally accomplished "Research Report of Chinese Mobile Phone Industrial Chain (Mobile Phone Manufacture Part)" .

"Research Report of Chinese Mobile Phone Industrial Chain (Mobile Phone Manufacture Part)" has more than 300 pages, including about 0.2 million words and more than 200 charts. The report researches Chinese mobile phone Industrial Chain systemically and comprehensively. It explores present situation and future trend of China mobile phone design companies, mobile phone chip and processor, mobile phone PCB board, passive component used in mobile phone, display screen used in mobile phone, mobile phone shell and keystroke, and connector used in mobile phone, etc.. Moreover, it details several respects of main manufacturers, from strength background, technology advantages, financial status, product structure, production ability, client status, and contact mode to future developing direction, the situation of investing and building up plants (and research center) in mainland of china. In addition, as to several aspects of Chinese mobile phone market, it introduces in detail, such as the market orientation of main manufacturers, management pattern and supply chain, design source of parts of products, sticking brand source, production resource and cooperating partner, main agents, and so on.
